Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson) is a lonely man married to a nagging wife. He befriends a young woman (Joan Bennett) who begins an affair with him, mistakenly believing he is a famous painter. She and her real fiancé (Dan Duryea) attempt to swindle him out of the fortune they wrongly assume he has.
