In this show, we are exploring one of our best friends: Denial

Denial is a natural mechanism built in to all humans to allow us to feel safer so that we can move forward with life. It is an excellent protection device for things we just cannot seem to handle at the time. When engaged in denial, we spend time saying things are not there, when they are. We refuse to acknowledge them because that may require something of us that is too much of a toll for where we currently are. During those times, we need that safety mechanism in place. It is no different than how our bodies go into physical shock. Shock is a protection that happens automatically to numb our senses. We don’t tell our bodies to go into shock, anymore than we told ourselves to engage in denial. Denial naturally kicks in for us because it is painful to look at what happened.

The problem is: Denial can become a way of life. Once you rely on it for coping with a traumatic event, you may find yourself engaging in it about many things. It becomes a way of life that is not true to us or others.
