President Trump Signs Trafficking Bill and Q & A With Reporters 1/9/19
resident Trump Signs Trafficking Bill and Q & A With Reporters 1/9/19. President Donald Trump says he thinks he and the Democrats are "getting closer" to a deal to end the budget stalemate that has partially shut down the government despite no evidence that any progress has been made. President Donald Trump is once again flirting with the possibility of declaring a national eency if he cannot reach a deal with Congress on border sec. In a pool spray from the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said he has the “absolute right” to declare an emergency if he cannot end the government shutdown by securing the funding he needs to build a border wall. “I think we might work a deal, and if we don’t we might go that route,” Trump said. “My threshold will be if I can’t make a deal with people that are unreasonable.” Trump also used part of the presser to claim federal workers support him keeping the government shut down until he can get his wall, even as they go without pay. “They’re all going to get their money and I think they’re going to be happy. … you take a look at social media, so many of those people are saying it’s very hard for me, it’s very hard for my family but Mr. President you’re doing the right thing…I think they have been terrific, these are terrific patriots, a lot of them agree with what I’m doing.” And he's suggesting the partial government shutdown could be "a blessing in disguise" because, he suggests, it could lead to a broader immigration deal.
Trump spoke Wednesday during an Oval Office bill signing on trafficking legislation. It's a day after he delivered a prime-time address trying to make the case for his long-stalled U.S.-Mexico border wall. Trump says that he would like to see "real immigration reform in this country because we need it." He says "Everybody wants to see immigration reform," adding that perhaps the stalemate "will turn out to be a blessing in disguise."
