orlared: Religion removed as a factor for school admissions (but only for Catholic schools)
The minister for Education, Richard Bruton says that religion has been removed as a factor that can be used in admissions in "virtually all" schools. What he means by "virtually all" is that only Catholic schools be banned from giving enrolment priority to members of their faith — a so-called ‘baptism barrier’.
However, minority faiths such as Church of Ireland, Muslim and Jewish schools will still be able to give priority to children of their religion in order to "protect their ethos" where they are over subscribed.
Minister Bruton says this means one in twenty current schools will be excluded from the new rules although that number will grow with the migrant population.
He has said that this will allow children of minority faiths to still have access to schools of their religion.
Only when minority religion schools have extra capacity will they have to take on children regardless of their religion.
