How to Stop Racism in 1 Easy Step - Jody Bruchon
We can fix racism. All we have to do is stop talking about race. It's not hard.
Imagine being a child that was born decades after the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, far removed from the extremely tense race relations of that time, where seeing people from all walks of life in a television show wasn't even remotely controversial. You've never known racism and never seen racism beyond caricatures in media. This continued into your adult life, with racism just not being a thing that you saw around you
One day, circa the year 2012, you see a very different piece of news where a black woman gets a white man fired from his job (a job in the same field you're in!) for making benign jokes while waiting for the start of a show at a tech conference, and the reason the woman gives afterwards is based on who he is physically far more so than the jokes he made. It's obviously a race-based attack, but it's a black woman destroying a white man's life rather than the way it has always been depicted in the movies and publications you've been exposed to throughout your life. White people were oppressive and black people were oppressed, or so you're told since you didn't exist until most of the dust from the fight for civil rights had settled.
From 2012 to 2019, this sort of white-targeting racism explodes and somehow becomes overtly acceptable within large chunks of the media. A narrative builds wherein white people are spoken of in the same way that black people were spoken of in the 1960s. The vast majority of the racism you see now is coming from people who call themselves "anti-racist" and it's a lot closer to affecting you personally in very real, very negative ways. You are broad-brushed into being a target of hate because of your ethnic group by people who are scolding other people for broad-brushing people into being targets of hate because of their ethnic groups. The people who attack your group claim they're victims of your racism as they strike you with racism.
What do you do? The natural thing to do is to defend yourself, but even that is now somehow "racist." And that is how you revive actual racism in the United States, because anyone who would abuse you in such a manner isn't treating you like a human, so why should you treat them any better?
Or...you and everyone else could just stop making everything about race and watch the while racism thing slowly go away.
