"Straits Chinese" (Singapore/Penang), everyday scenes from times past

Who? Chinese settlers (or their descendants) in the British-colonial Straits settlements.
Where? Singapore (car license plate spotted), possibly Penang or even Malacca (Melaka) too, similar scenes familiar to old-timers.
When? Not later than the 1970s.
Why? The British encouraged the immigration of Chinese during their colonial rule particularly in the Straits settlements they controlled. The Chinese settlers provided labor, including tin mining in certain states of then-Malaya. Some Chinese immigrated to Malaya much earlier, even before the Western colonists came over. They retained many aspects of Chinese traditional culture that got wiped out when the communists took over China. Many of these Chinese, especially those who came earlier (even during the 1500s) adopted aspects of the local Malay culture and became known as the Babas (men) and Nyonyas (women), and were known as the "Peranakan" people in the local tongue.
