People often fail to take into account scale, proportion, and comparing to a known observed optimum when taking a measure of something. This is a critical fallacy in reasoning and is sometimes done maliciously on purpose. Even in finding an optimum degree or amount of something, you have to control for all variables that may be bringing about better or worse results in an experiment. When people try to scare you with a number of something, but fail to tell you the optimal number and how they determined it, they are lying to you. That is not science. They are selling something.
