Figure Note:
Stop-Motion Transformation of Planet X PX-06B Hephaestus. I really like how the tail transforms, but it does have a pretty bad clearance issue. One of the calf panels (a folded-up tail half) actually fails to clear. I simultaneously twist the waist to minimize it, but there’s no avoiding it. The brown stalk that transports the piece actually bends slightly to get the piece past.

Production Note: I tried to have the tail move like a lizard, but it was too fast so it ended up more like a dog. It’s tricky when you’re doing a turn to also do animation, because there’s kind of a minimum distance you can move a part and if you only move it every other rotation segment, it looks herky-jerky. So I HAVE to move it with every slight movement of the rotation. I tried to move it as slightly as possible, but I knew halfway through the turn that it was going to end up too rapid.
Viewing Note:
If you want to follow along, I recommend skipping to the speed run and using the Chrome plugin called "Frame by Frame for YouTube". It turns your , and . keyboard keys into single-frame movement keys. Every step of the transformation is documented in the frames of the video, in what I consider to be the best sequence. With minimal rubbing and minimal parts-parking.
