The San Bernardino Police Department responded to a call late Thursday because a man was allegedly jumping on vehicles outside of a convenience store in the parking lot of King Tut Liquor in the 200 block of East Street, in the California city Sgt. John Echevarria said.
The suspect, Mark Matthew Bender Jr., 35, did not listen to officers who approached him and attempted to enter the store.
“The responding officer identified himself and ordered the suspect to show his hands. The suspect clearly ignored the officer and walked away from him, saying he was going to the store,” Sgt. John Echevarria said in a Friday statement. “The officer noticed several patrons and employees inside of the convenience store and attempted to detain the suspect before he entered, to prevent him from harming anyone inside.
Sgt. John Echevarria said Bender had “retrieved a weapon from his pocket” during the struggle.
“When the officer saw that he had a weapon, he defended himself with his firearm,” Echevarria said, adding that detectives at the scene found a handgun Bender drew from his pocket before he was shot.
Bender was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Echevarria said Friday that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
