For the first time since 2008, an Orange County jury on Tuesday recommended the death penalty for a man convicted of first-degree murder.

By a vote of 11-1, the jury decided that capital punishment was an appropriate sentence for Bessman Okafor in the 2012 death of Alex Zaldivar, a 19-year-old who was set to testify against Okafor in a separate trial.

The jury's verdict marks the end of the 31/2-week trial in which Okafor was convicted of first-degree murder to prevent Zaldivar and his two roommates from taking the stand after their Ocoee home was robbed. Zaldivar was killed by two fatal bullets to the back of his head.
