Technologies such as the internet have no doubt had a overwhelmingly positive impact on mankind, allowing us to communicate and share information far quick than we ever could have imagined which in turn has drastically accelerated our advancement in many fields such as science, healthcare, industry, etc.

There is however a darker side to the internet, one which see’s tech giants such as Google, Apple and Facebook-owned Instagram enabling an illegal online slave market y providing and approving apps used for the buying and selling of domestic workers in the Gulf.

In this BBC special we see and undercover investigation take place which exposes app users in Kuwait breaking local and international slavery laws, some of which include a woman offering a child for sale.

After being alerted to the issue, Facebook said it had banned one of the hashtags involved and taken down 703 accounts from Instagram.

Google and Apple said they were working with app developers to prevent illegal activity.
