A song from the time before the failed German revolution of 1848/49. The political writer Johann Rudolf Kölner (1800 - 1877), known as "Kölner der Saure", wrote the text as early as 1830. The melody is from the old hunting song "Auf auf zum fröhlichen Jagen" https://www.youtube.com/watch? v = KZHir_Ov48k. The text was first distributed on leaflets before it was published in the craftsman's songbook "Deutsche Volksstimme" in 1840. The song, especially the last stanza in which the colors black-red-gold stand for the demands for national unity, freedom and popular sovereignty, was supposedly sung with particular fervor by the nationally-minded fraternity members at the Hambach Festival in 1832.
Kölner used an old hunting song for his revolutionary text because the song was very well known, and probably also because the hunt was mostly reserved for the nobility at that time. So he basically turned the situation at the time upside-down: the princes, who are otherwise the hunters, are hunted by the free citizens.

Text:
Wild jagen freie Bürger, heut' jedes Kronentier!
English Translation:
Hello to the wild hunt on every crowned animal!
See, the day begins in the whole hunting ground!
Come down, you faithful rifle, from the silent hut wall!
To shoot princely foxes, in the great fatherland!
Refrain:
Ridihejo, di hejo, dihe-dihe-dijo, ridijoh
Hejo, di hejo, dihe-dihe-ridijoh!
Out, you sharp blades! From a narrow iron sheath!
Soon you shall jump merrily, in the manly club!
The freedom maiden, so loving, invites you so urgently:
To joy, pure and heartfelt, out of a silent room!
Forth with you stranglers of men, into the vast hunting ground!
Today free citizens wildly hunt every crowned animal!
Whoosh, wild boar, with taut bristles, so red from Polish blood
The wild hunter chases you dead in the free forests!
The black of servitude is fading in the bloody red of battle!
The gold of freedom proclaims the end of all misery!
Aim well, be sharp, you loyal ones: you rifle and you sword!
Posterity will be happy about that, in their own free homes!
