Beethoven completed this Trio in 1811, with the premiere performance being given in April of 1814 at the hotel Zum römischen Kaiser in Vienna. Beethoven composed the Trio for Archduke Rudolph of Austria. Rudolf was a patron, friend and student of Beethoven.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro moderato
II. Scherzo (Allegro)
III. Andante cantabile ma però con moto. Poco piu adagio
IV. Allegro moderato – Presto
