The Home of Martians - Horsell Common Explored

HG Wells wrote his famous book, The War of The Worlds, while living in Woking, in Surrey in the last quarter of the 19th Century. He set the landing of the first cylinder in the sandy soil of Horsell Common, a real piece of public land just outside the town.

Today, I met up with David Chown, a lover and expert of trees, to explore the flora of this remarkable manmade place and look at the old sandpits that once provided the town with its building materials.
