Today, too:
- people are being accustomed to the fact that it is possible to exclude and stigmatise someone - sanitary segregation
- constitutions are being violated under the cover of a pandemic
- people are being made insensitive and indifferent
- the authorities violated the accepted existing social contracts
- censorship / media bias
"Auschwitz did not fall from the sky."
"We are beginning to become accustomed to the idea. That you can exclude someone, that you can stigmatise someone. That you can alienate someone. And so slowly, slowly, gradually, day by day, people begin to get used to it. And the victims. And the torturers. And the spectators, the witnesses... everyone who sees it, starts to get used to the idea that this minority... that they are different, that they can be pushed out of society, that they are different people, that they are strangers, that they are people who spread germs, epidemics. This is already terrible. This is dangerous. This is the beginning of what could happen in a moment.
If we think about this and remember the words "Auschwitz did not fall from the sky", that the authorities of that time, which on the one hand conduct a clever policy, because, for example, they meet the demands of workers... can play on national dignity... and at the same time, these authorities see that people are slowly becoming desensitised, indifferent, they stop reacting to evil and then these authorities can afford to further accelerate the process of evil. And then it follows rapidly ... and then follows rapidly the sending to the ghettos."
"Auschwitz did not fall from the sky. Auschwitz was trotting, trotting, with small steps coming closer, until what happened here happened."
"It happened. It means it can happen. That means it could happen anywhere, all over the Earth."
"What do you think, I think it could only be in Germany, could it be somewhere else? it could be in your country, it could be in your country, if civil rights are violated, if minority rights are undervalued, if they are eliminated, if the law is bent.... then it can happen...
If you can defend your constitution, defend your rights, defend your democratic order, which is to defend the rights of minorities, then you can overcome this."
"The 11th Commandment - Do not be indifferent."
"Do not be indifferent if you see historical lies. Do not be indifferent when you see the past being stretched to suit current political needs. Do not be indifferent when any minority is discriminated against, because the essence of democracy is that the majority rules, but democracy is that the rights of minorities must be protected at the same time. Do not be indifferent when any power violates accepted social agreements that already exist... because if you don't, you won't even look back when 'some' Auschwitz suddenly falls from the sky on you and your descendants."
