Cesium Tetraiodothallate or Cs[TlI4] is a strongly colored double salt complex with a moderate solubility in water. Its formation was used as a test for the presence of thallium(III) ions in a sample back in the days before modern instrumental analysis. I prepare this double salt and then evaporate the liquid to get extremely tiny crystals of Cs[TlI4]. I then use an electronic dissecting scope to view the crystals at 1600x magnification.
