It was the last night of Black Opportunities’ Summer of Hope: 55 days of block parties in NYC providing the people with food, connection, and positive outlets for all that extra summer energy. The goal was to combat gun violence, and it worked. Shootings went down by 40% and Black love, joy, and connections went through the roof. But, instead of thanking them, offering to help, or paying Black Opportunities for doing their job better than they do, cops showed up and tried to harass them. Well, co-founder and long-time organizer Hawk Newsome was there to meet them and help them relocate the minds they had clearly lost: “Without that badge, you ain’t shit!”

This was a permitted event, and Black Opportunities had jumped through all the hoops to make sure there was nothing the police could harass them for. So, Hawk Newsome let them know they were absolutely powerless there, and having totally deflated their egos, walked off in something that looked like a scene from a movie: “Turn the music back on!”
