Dark Nights: Metal was one of DC's most engaging, maximalist crossovers in years. The massive crossover revealed the Dark Multiverse, the dark side of all creation, as its denizens like the Batman Who Laughs tried to invade DC's primary multiverse, as it pushed Batman, Superman and the rest of DC's heroes to the absolute edge.
However, like all of DC's multiverse-spanning crossovers, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Metal was built around numerous tie-in issues and one-shot specials that made it more than a little confusing to keep track of. Now, we're taking a look back at the crossover and its tie-ins to get a better idea of just how everything went down.
The main Metal series begins with the Justice League discovering that a giant mountain has sprung into the city. After learning the apparent truth about Barbatos thanks to Hawkman's journals, Batman goes rogue and tries to prevent Barbatos from ever manipulating his life. However, in the process, the Dark Knight falls into a trap set by the Court of Owls, Barbatos' earthly servants, and unwillingly unleashes Barbatos and the Dark Knights from the Dark Multiverse.
The Dark Knights are versions of Batman from twisted realities in the Dark Multiverse, As detailed in the various one-shots about each of them, they were all killers all who were brought together with the promise that taking over the prime multiverse could bring back their worlds from the brink. The group is led by the Batman Who Laughs, who was infected with the Joker toxin and became a deadly combination of the Dark Knight and his nemesis.
