The Story of a Flemish Farm Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams

In 1942 Vaughan Williams was approached by Two Cities Film Production company to compose the film score to the movie “A Flemish Farm”. Vaughan Williams agreed and contributed the music to the movie which would be premiered in September of 1943. Vaughan Williams would adapt the score into a suite for orchestra, and conducted the first public performance of the suite in July of 1945.

The suite is comprised of seven movements:
I. The Flag Flutters in the Wind
II. Night by the Sea, Farewell to the Flag
III. Dawn in the Old Barn, The Parting of the Lovers
IV. In the Café
V. The Major goes to face his Fate
VI. The Dead Man’s Kit
VII. The Wanderings of the Flag
