Maryša Overture, Op. 18 by Vítězslav Novák

Czech composer Novák completed this work for orchestra in 1898 at the age of 28. While the prevailing popular music in 1890’s Bohemia was that of composer such as Brahms and Wagner, Novák was becoming more interested in the folk music of Moravia and Slovakia. This interest would later develop into an intensive patriotism towards the Czechoslovakia, first formed in 1918 after the first world war.

This work is comprised of a single movement.
