Beware False Virtues

The parable of the wheat and tares can refer the individual’s soul. Since the tares look like the wheat, they can represent vices masquerading as virtues. An excess of moral virtue pursues a good out of due order; it can be identified by the evil fruit it bears. Consider humility which seeks to conceal itself contrasted to that pursued by an excessive outward show. Or patience that bears imperfections versus tolerance that ignores evils which ought to be corrected. False virtue is distinguished by knowing what particular circumstances call for. Moreover, false virtue is oriented towards oneself whereas true virtue is directed to God’s glory. The inconstant opt to ignore the problem or counter act it with yet another excess. They avoid the more difficult path of finding the balanced mean. One should instead work to rein in, or refocus, an excess - trusting that before the judgment, Our Lord will transform that tare into good wheat.
