Decided to give Wicce another try and despite starting from the first levels again I had better success. It turns out that the game saves your progress at the beginning of each stage. After defeating the spider boss once again it turns out that it ran away and I had to face it once more at the end of the first level. Just before that I discovered a market where you can spend all your coins, but the only available item is herbs, which in fairness are quite useful, especially for the boss battles. The 2nd level introduced new enemies and the option to discover and heal civilians. There was a small hiccup since the market before facing the stage boss a 2nd time bugged out and I could buy any herbs, but I somehow managed to prevail.
