Heroic Hubris: To Slay A Dragon [DND/RPG]
I guess I’m doing this weekly now? Ugh...
You know this is just my overenthusiastic ill-informed opinion, right?
Heroic Hubris: To Slay A Dragon [D&D/RPG]
Can a man stand against a nuclear bomb?
What if this bomb were a living creature, with an imperious will, and immortal anger?
What sort of man could fight against this monster, and live to tell the tale?
By what means can mere mortals attempt to overcome DRAGONS?
SUP NERDS
I’m Drew Cochran and these are my associates, Aroxthenes and Heracles, Son of Zeus.
Welcome to Heroic Hubris, where we survey legends of mythological heroes of different classic RPG Classes, and glean wisdom from them for our games!
Last week we talked about Dragons and stuff. This week we’re going to finish that discussion on dragons, from a human point of view, taking cues from mythology, anthropology, and whatever else comes up. Today we’re going to be looking at stories from a WIZARD, a KNIGHT, and a KING who each successfully slayed a dragon.
But before we get grandiose, I’m gonna show you two different anecdotes from history of people talking about dealing with dragons.
1st Anecdote - Dragon Hunters of India -
1658 - THE HISTORY OF FOUR FOOTED BEASTS Edward Topsell
https://archive.org/details/historyoffourfoo00tops/page/n6
2nd Anecdote - Titus “Livy” Livius Patavinus, a Roman historian.
An African reptile attacked the army of General Regulus. According to Livy,
“After many soldiers had been seized in its [the dragon’s] mouth, and many more crushed by the folds of its tail, its hide being too thick for javelins and darts, the dragon was at last attacked by military engines and crushed by repeated blows from heavy stones.”
We’ll look at stories of three different heroes; a Wizard, a Knight, and a King, who each defeated a dragon, and for the most part, avoided massive loss.
WIZARD: The Prophet Daniel - Wisdom, and Cunning - Bel and the Dragon
KNIGHT: The Redcrosse Knight - Character, Mettle, and Holy Aid/Power - The Faer..
