Tchaikovsky completed this quartet in 1871, with the premiere performance being given in March the same year in Moscow. Disability advocate Helen Keller was present at a performance of this quartet and enjoyed the work so much she requested the second movement be played again so she could ‘feel’ the music vibrations through a resonant table nearby.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Moderato e semplice
II. Andante cantabile
III. Scherzo: Allegro non tanto e confuoco
IV. Finale. Allegro giusto – Allegro vivace
