Brahms would complete this sonata in 1886, with the premiere performance being given the following year. Unusually, while Brahms would only write two Cello sonatas, they would be written 24 years apart. Brahms dedicated his second cello sonata to Robert Hausmann, a cello virtuoso and friend of Brahms. Hausmann would be the virtuoso at the premiere of the second cello sonata.

This sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro vivace
II. Adagio affettuoso
III. Allegro passionate
IV. Allegro molto
