A song from the Nerother Wandervogel, words & music: Otto Leis, 1936
Otto Leis (1909-1984), travel name ottsch, was a poet, draftsman and songwriter of the German youth movement from the Nerother Wandervogel.
"Horrido" or "Horridoh" is an old greeting and hunting call from the hunter's language, which is derived from the hounding call of the dog master or pack leader during battues to cheer on the hunting dogs. This call was originally "Ho' Rüd' Ho'"! The summarization of this call to a word probably already took place in Middle High German.
Outside of the hunter community, the salute is mainly used by the German youth movement, forest youth and in parts of the scout movement in German-speaking countries. There, with the advent of National Socialism, "Horridoh" replaced the previously used greeting "Heil".
The saying was also adopted by the military. The combination "Horrido - Joho" is used as a battle cry in the German army by the branches of the rifleman, military police, Mountain Infantry, Army Reconnaissance Troops and some Panzergrenadier units.
In some rifle clubs, the expression is used as a greeting or as a toast.
