Dems Lose Control With Citizenship Question on 2020 Census

AP: Justices Seem Ready To OK Asking Citizenship Question On U.S. Census. The Supreme Court’s conservative majority seemed ready on Tuesday to go through with President Trump’s plan to ask about U.S. citizenship on the 2020 census in a case that could affect American elections for the next 10 years. Three lower courts have so far blocked the plan to ask every U.S. resident about citizenship on the census, saying that the question would discourage immigrants from being participating. The Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, and members of the ACLU spoke to the press after one of the census hearings and said the Census was about an equal distribution of power. Letitia says the question would lead to the underrepresentation of illegal immigrants. The last time the question was included on the census form was in 1950. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross decided to add the citizenship question to allow the Department of Justice to better enforce the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson and aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented Black Americans from exercising their right to vote as guaranteed under the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
