Piano Quartet No. 2 in F minor, Op. 2 by Felix Mendelssohn

Mendelssohn would complete this piano quartet in 1823 at the age of 14. An exact date of the public premiere is difficult to determine, however there are published reviews of the quartet, first in 1825 and then in 1828.

The work is dedicated to Carl Friedrich Zelter. In 1817, Mendelssohn’s parents hired Zelter to be a composition and music tutor to Mendelssohn. It is through Zelter that Mendelssohn would also become familiar with Goethe due to the friendship between Zelter and Goethe, and Zelter bringing Mendelssohn to meet Goethe in 1820.

This quartet is comprised off four movements:
I. Allegro molto
II. Adagio
III. Intermezzo: Allegro moderato
IV. Finale: Allegro molto vivace
