All of us eventually die, and while our physical body moves on, our journey doesn’t end there.
Ghosts are people too. They just happen to be dead, and should be treated with the same respect as if they were alive. Some spirits return from the dead to haunt the places they left behind that are usually believed to be associated with some occurrence or emotion in their past; often home or the place where they died.
Sometimes they respond to requests to confirm their presence through vocal responses and manipulation of objects. Other times they make themselves known by appearing as apparitions or making strange noises and smells.
This is possible because one’s spirit exists separately from our body and may continue to exist after death. Since ancient times, there have been countless tales of spirits haunting properties and their tenants, in some extreme cases inflicting torture on the occupants. Many societies are using funeral rituals as a way of ensuring that the dead person’s spirit does not return to haunt the living.
Ghost stories go back centuries and are more common than many may believe. Death and taxes are two things we cannot escape. It’s certain that all of us will experience a dead end.
Sylvia Shults dives into some of the hundreds of ghost stories she has compiled. David Zayas warns about interacting with these beings after having experiences at the Atlantic County Courthouse in New Jersey and at home that took a sinister turn.
