U.S. To Owe More Than The Size Of Its Economy For The 1st Time In 75
Years
The pandemic is taking a big toll on the government's bottom line.
The federal government's accumulated debt burden is projected to be larger
than the overall economy next year for the first time since 1946. Debt is
expected to reach an all-time high of 107% of gross domestic product in
2023.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office expects the deficit to reach
$3.3 trillion in the fiscal year ending this month. That's about 16% of GDP —
a level not seen since the end of World War II in 1945.
Federal spending has soared to 32% of GDP this fiscal year as the
government tries to address both the economic and public health costs of the
pandemic.

A trio of Democrats on Thursday introduced legislation to declare structural
racism a public health crisis and to create a federal government center to
tackle racial disparities in health care for Black communities and other

and Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., to unveil their plan to require the
federal government to begin actively developing "anti-racist health policy."
The lawmakers pointed to the coronavirus pandemic and police brutality ‒
which has set off a summer of racial unrest in America ‒ as reasons to pass
the legislation.

“It is time we start treating structural racism like we would treat any other
public health problem or disease: investing in research into its symptoms and
causes and finding ways to mitigate its effects," Warren, the former

and Pressley is a first step to create anti-racist federal health policy that
studies and addresses disparities in health outcomes at their roots.”
A former top Department of Homeland Security official who resigned in
April says the Trump administration is creating the conditions for domestic
extremism to flourish in the United States.
Elizabeth Neumann left her position as assistant secretary of counterterrorism

President Trump is right when he says mob violence is threatening Americans
in their own communities.
But even as he greatly exaggerates the danger posed by those demonstrating
against systemic racism and injustice, Trump is ignoring — and at times
himself inciting — a potentially much deadlier threat: heavily armed White
militia members showing up at Black Lives Matter protests with the
purported goal of protecting against property damage and injuries to
civilians.
That’s a big problem, whether Trump is doing it intentionally or not. And it
will only get worse as one of the most polarized and divisive presidential
campaigns in recent history goes into the home stretch.
Local police aren’t ready or able to confront these militia members, who
often show up at rallies carrying assault rifles and dressed in uniforms that
make them virtually indistinguishable from law enforcement agents or the
National Guard. In some cases, police have welcomed them.
