In 1643, France was hit by the Plague. Lyon is devastated. The inhabitants decided to gather together with torchlights and to pray for the protection of Our Lady, in exchange for which they promised to pay homage to her every year.
A few days later the plague stopped. And the inhabitants keep their promise: since that date, in December, the city lights up with torches to honour the Mary, Our Lady.
But this year, the mayor (from the Socialist Party) banned the gathering. This while the same day he authorized the meeting organized in the city by an Islamist, imam Nader Abou Anas.
Nevertheless, young patriots of Generation Identity braved the ban to perpetuate the tradition.
The city of Lyon thus continues to honour its promise.
Note : Lyon is the former capital of France in the 2nd Century. It was called Lugdunum, "the city of God Lug", Lug being the Celtic name for Thor.
