Offenbach composed the opera ‘The Tales of Hoffmann’ in 1800 after seeing the play Les contes fantastiques d'Hoffmann by Barbier and Michel Carré. The content of the play and the opera is based on the short stories of E.T. A Hoffmann. Offenbach died before the opera was performed. The opera was premiered at the Opéra-Comique, Paris in 1881.

The Barcarolle occurs in the first half of Act 3 of the opera.
