The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is part of the New Chicago skyline.
To cut costs, some footage and various props were used from Glen A. Larson's series Battlestar Galactica (1978). Even some of the concept designs from Battlestar Galactica were used. The Terran starfighters on Buck Rogers were originally designed as the Colonial Vipers for Battlestar Galactica, but Larson had opted for a design closer than the X-Wing fighters from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) Larson then used the unused designs for Buck Rogers.
Tiger man is played by Duke Butler for the first half of the Movie/ episode then replaced by H. B. Haggerty for the second half. H. B. Haggerty remained in the role for the rest of the series.
In the movie Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979), William Conrad was the voice of the Draconia's PA system. However, in the television series' pilot episode "Awakening", his voice was replaced by that of Vic Perrin.
The laser guns and rifles used by the Earth Forces are props originally used by the villains in Battlestar Galactica: Greetings from Earth (1979) called the Eastern Alliance, and in Battlestar Galactica: Experiment in Terra (1979), the Earth Defense laser rifle appears. Because both series were produced by Glen A. Larson, many props, models and costumes would be reused through this series' run.
In the original script of the pilot, there was a subplot in which it is revealed that Kane had once been one of Dr. Huer's students. This is alluded to when Ardala comments, "You're from Earth, Kane...". Also, in the original script, during the reception for Ardala in the Inner City, there is a bantering conversation between Huer and Kane where he hints that he has progressed far further under the Draconians than Huer would have allowed him to.
Buck told Wilma "I lost everything that was important to me: a mother, father, brothers, sisters, a woman I cared for". The woman he referred to was his girlfriend Jennifer, as revealed on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: A Dream of Jennifer (1980).
In Awakening Dr. Huer Is Wearing His Dress Uniform With a Dark Purple Sash. On This Sash Are The Medals He Earned. One Of Those Medals Is A Miniature Version Of The Purple Heart.
In this pilot episode, Kane is played by Henry Silva. In future episodes with Pamela Hensley as Princess Ardala, he is played by Michael Ansara.
