The first time a wide popular audience of English-speakers read about the 3rd eye was
a fictional account by Cyril Henry Hoskin , a Plympton, Devonshire UK surgical fitter,
born 1910/08/08 to a village plumber
1948 in his garden Thames Ditton, Surrey, after falling from a fir tree he had a concussion &
he saw a saffron robed Buddhist monk walking towards him who asked to take over his body
& who told of a hole being drilled into his head to open the 3rd eye & asserted that For the rest of his life you will see people as they are & not as they pretend to be so he legally changed his name to Carl Kuon Suo & ghost wrote as Tuesday Lobsang Rampa & his writings were spiritually positive and contained deep insight that could never have been made up about Tibetan monastic life and buddhist teachings but he said his book Living with the Lama was dictated to him by his pet Siamese cat, Mrs. Fifi Grey whiskers
Heinrich Harrer (author of Seven Years in Tibet) immediately recognized the book as a fraud that
introduces occult ideas not found in Buddhist teaching, mistaking the the 14,000 foot Tibetan highlands at 24,000 feet altitude & not knowing that the Buddhist Sutras book Kan-gyur Bkah Hygur is not memorized or read by apprentices to pass a test
