Microplastics Found In Human Lungs

"In a new study, scientists have detected microplastics deep in the lungs of living people for the first time. They used spectrometry to identify a total of 39 microplastics, found in all regions of the lung. This included large particles that had managed to pass through the smaller airways of the lower lung. Polypropylene, used for packaging and pipes, and PET, commonly used for beverage bottles, were the two most common types of plastic found. It is possible to breathe in microplastics. "

"Testing the waters:
..."Plastics are known to contain, release or absorb toxic chemicals. These materials, upon entering our body, can interact with our physiological system in a variety of ways. They have been found in intestinal walls, gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder., pancreas, spleen and liver. According to 2016 report by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, microplastics have also been shown to enter the bloodstream before they discharge in the kidneys and liver."

According to various estimates, by 2016, microplastics detection efforts reported there were between 15 and 51 trillion pieces of microplastics in the world’s oceans. About one million plastic water bottles were bought every minute across the globe in 2017, according to Forbes Magazine. Yet only nine percent was recycled. The rest end up in landfills, or on our beaches and in our parks. Some of those materials can wash away into our oceans, lakes, or rivers.
