Battle for Norway - 1940 Campaign [1940 documentary by Martin Rikli and Werner Buhre]

This rare, 81 minute film, created under the order of Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, displays the sequence of events that lead to Germany's strategic invasion of Norway.

The film is narrated in German with English subtitles. "In spite of the apparently calm winters of 1939/1940, our adversaries were searching for an advantageous attack position," we're told in the opening scene of the film. "Russia's assault on Finland gave Britain a pretext to seize important positions in Norway and Sweden. [...] The Norwegian government seemed reluctant to defend it's neutrality. All indications suggested an imminent allied occupation of Norway. An English attack on Germany from Norway and Denmark must be prevented."

The documentary features some of the most captivating footage of WW2, however it's existence was unknown until a little more than a decade and a half ago. With the exception of a few clips, the film was considered to be lost, and for unknown reasons, it was also never shown to a German audience.

However, a complete nitrate copy of the film surfaced on an Internet auction in 2005 and was later purchased by a Norwegian college professor named Jostein Saakvitne.

No more than a year ago, this incredible footage was colorized.
