A woman was killed and five others were wounded in a shooting at a vigil near a Long Beach bar early Saturday morning, the Long Beach Police Department said.
A Marine patrol officer who was in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Canal Avenue heard gunshots at around around 12:40 a.m. and called Long Beach officers who responded to find three men and and three woman suffering from gunshot wounds, police said in a news release.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to treat the victims and pronounced one of the women dead at the scene.
Police only identified the woman as a 57-year-old resident of Ontario but family members who were at the scene of the shooting said the victim is Jacquelyn Hodge Glasby, a mother of two who is originally from Wilmington but lived in Ontario.
Another woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition and three men were transported with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities. All four suffered gunshot wounds to their upper-torsos.
A third woman took herself to a nearby hospital with a not life-threatening gunshot wound to her lower torso, police said.
The group was gathered in a parking lot at a vigil for a person who had recently died, "when an unknown number of suspects began shooting," police said a preliminary investigation revealed.
A bar patron described hearing several shots fired right after a band playing at the bar finished their set and running out to find his rear windshield shattered.
The shooting occurred near the West Cocktail Lounge located at 1616 W. Pacific Coast Highway.
