In this video I prepare BPSP following a prep published by the Chem Department of Shiraz University, Iran (Tetrahedron Letters, Vol. 23, No. 17, 1982, pages 1847-1850). This reagent can be thought of as a milder version of potassium permanganate and while it has similar uses it produces products in much higher yields without all that pesky overoxidation of the product that makes KMnO4 so useless for organic chem. Given how easy BPSP is to make and how widely available the reactants needed to make it are I have no doubt that it will prove to be a useful addition to any amateur chemists toolkit.
