Dungeon Munchies - Playthrough Part 7 (Ending)
As we collect more of Simmer's memories we get a vision of somebody sacrificing himself using a spell to create a super powerful zombie, but erasing his existence in the process. Until now I thought that the zombie was Khamul, Simmer's supposed boyfriend, but this debunks that theory since the zombie was created when both Simmer and Grill were already spirits and Khamul died before that. We also learn how Simmer's group of friends met their end. They were all infected by the C-04 virus and as they were dying Simmer sacrificed everyone to extract hers and Grill's souls in the hopes that the two mages may do something after they are dead. You have to face Simmer in order to stop her from destroying her soul while trying to lift the barrier. The boss battle with her is tough since she is fast, has a variety of bullet hell and sword attacks and summons different minions. The weapons I used inflicted continuous damage after a hit, so that made things a bit easier. Eventually I defeated her and Grill used her own soul energy to restore Simmer. Then we get something of a sequel bait ending of Simmer telling you about Putrid (which is what I presume to be the hive-mind of the C-04) and that she opened a small gap in the barrier for you to get out and deal with it in the hopes of clearing up the path to the Stargate. You can then start a New Game+, but I don't see much of a point aside from extra challenge.
Dungeon Munchies was a major surprise. I expected a lighthearted action game, but the level of smart engaging writing, great characters, the right mix of tragedy and humour really elevated this title. The art during dialogue is fantastic and anime-inspired. Unfortunately the controls and gameplay systems aren't as good. The jump feels a bit rapid and it brings inertia with it, which makes it hard to get on small platforms accurately. The cooking system is an interesting idea, but the spaces you can store the meals are very limited so towards the end of the game I preferred to have perks related to my health, especially for bosses. You can craft a lot of weapons, but having their moves linked to food perks is not a great idea since you may lack the correct combination to make great use of a certain weapon, essentially forcing you to pick something else. Regardless of the weapon, the combat feels chaotic and your attacks rarely have an visible effect on the enemies, who can be bullet sponges sometimes, so it's usually best to make a high damage setup. The level design is nothing special, but the boss battles are really cool. Despite the gameplay drawbacks, I'd definitely recommend the title because of the wonderful story. Unfortunately it left a lot of gaps on what happened and the cliffhanger ending may annoy some, but I do hope this game gets a sequel to explain things further.
