This, the first major animated TV Christmas special, which blazed the trail for Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch, and so many others, featured none other than UPA's Mr. Magoo. Here he is a stage actor, starring in a Broadway production of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Magoo's trademark nearsighted antics are mostly limited to the framing segments. When he's in character as Scrooge, the classic story is played straight.
The success of this special led to Magoo's second TV series, The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo (1964), in which he continues as a stage actor playing roles in a wide array of plays from Shakespeare to Shelly and beyond.
A production error has the ghosts appear in an atypical order, but it still works. Look for Gerald McBoing-Boing playing Tiny Tim, using a human voice rather than his usual sound-effects.
