A model can help us solve a comparison problem by helping us visualize the amounts that are being compared. A model will help us decide if we need to multiply or subtract to solve. There are clue words in word problems that will help us decide which operation to use. If we need to find how many more or how many less, we'll need to use subtraction to compare quantities. If we need to find how many times as much, we'll need to use multiplication to compare quantities. We show four examples of word problems comparing quantities. We solve a word problem involving direction. We solve another word problem involving perimeter.
