While attempting the Mad Forest again I managed to evolve the Magic Wand into a Holy Wand, which shoots without delay. Then in the eastern part of the map I discovered a coffin. When I approached it a ring of enemies appeared. Once I dispatched them all the coffin started glowing and walking over it earned me a "the vampire is in another coffin" gag, but it also unlocked a new character to play as. I managed to survive for 30 minutes, when a reaper appeared and killed me again, but this is apparently how stages are completed here.
