My latest unboxing and review video on the Hornby R9289 Edward the Blue Engine from the Thomas and Friends range in OO gauge. This one is the last of the six post-2016 models that I have and this version of Edward is in the correct shade of blue as per the Thomas and the Gordon models that I have previously covered in other model train reviews.
Personally I like the Hornby version the best because although he not be an exactly replica of the TV show model of Edward. The model has a semi-glazed drivers cab that is a nice touch. Edward is a tender drive model with only two powered axles. The locomotive and tender are permanently coupled together and there is a wired connection to extra pickups to improve reliability on the track.
Although this model is tender drive rather than locomotive drive like with Henry that I have previously covered in another review. There is plenty of traction to haul a 4 car passenger train or a medium sized freight train.
The Hornby model of Edward is DCC ready and you will only need to add an 8 pin chip into the model to covert it to DCC operation. The conversion is simple. I have not covered the instructions because I have done this on the review of Gordon and I try to avoid being too repetitive.
The packaging is the newer style blister pack that will protect the model when stored and personally I prefer this packaging because it makes removing the model from the box much easier and reduces the risk of damaging anything. Overall a very nice model from Hornby and I would suggest getting this one whilst you still can because Hornby will not be making this range of model trains after 2018.
