Nigel Farage rules out second Brexit vote riots 'We're not French!'
Nigel Farage attacked the claim that a second EU referendum would lead to rioting in the streets, insisting “we’re just not French”, before arguing a second public vote would be preferable to Theresa May’s deal.
He added a new political party is being created to campaign for a hard-Brexit. The group, called the ‘Brexit Party’, has already submitted papers to the Electoral Commission.
Mr Farage was asked about Mrs May’s claim that a second Brexit vote would threaten “social cohesion” in the UK.
ITV host Robert Peston claimed: “Some people are saying there would be riots on the streets, what do you say to that?”
The top Brexiteer replied: “No. We’re just not French!
“Is there considerable anger out there, would you see some people behaving very badly, possibly yes.
“But I think provided those millions who are angry with the Brexit betrayal, if that’s what comes, get a political vehicle to get behind they won’t need to do that.”
There have been growing concerns about the state of political discourse in the UK as the Brexit process reaches deadlock.
Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the most senior counter-terrorism officer in the UK, warned yesterday that a “febrile” atmosphere has been created that could be exploited by the far-right.
On January 7 anti-Brexit Conservative MP Anna Soubry was abused and jostled outside Parliament by a group of men calling her a “Nazi”.
Mr Farage argued UKIP has let extremists in under the leadership of Gerard Batten, and said a new pro-Brexit party is being created.
He commented: “I was part of Ukip for 25 years, I always made tough political arguments but I always kept the extremes out of it.
