Tchaikovsky completed his fourth symphony in 1878, with the premiere performance being given in February of the same year at a concert organised by the Russian Musical Society in Moscow. In a letter Tchaikovsky wrote to fellow composer Sergei Taneyev, he mentions that he considered the concept of ‘Fate’ while composing this work and wanted it to partly reflect the similar narrative content of Beethoven’s fifth Symphony.

The work did not have a positive reception at the premiere, however has since gained popularity and is a frequent performance piece. The work is dedicated to the frequent patron of Tchaikovsky, Nadezhda von Meck.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Andante sostenuto – Moderato con anima
II. Andantino in modo di Canzona
III. Scherzo. Pizzicato ostinato. Allegro
IV. Finale. Allegro con fuoco
