Brahms completed this concerto in 1881, with the premiere performance being given in November the same year in Budapest, eight years after the cities of Buda and Pest united to become a single entity. The work was dedicated to a music teacher of Brahms, Eduard Marxsen. Brahms was the soloist at the premiere performance.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro non troppo
II. Allegro appassionato
III. Andante
IV. Allegretto grazioso—Un poco più presto
