met Madonna once in a discotheque in Forest Hills before she was famous. She told me she wanted to rule the world. She then would go to all the Manhattan discotheques and dated some well known DJS who helped her with connections in The Music Industry. In those days DJS were given records for free by the record companies to promote before they were on the radio. The record companies found out this was better than the radios as you would get an instant reaction from the people and many records became very popular this way. To this day many of the best music was only found in discotheques and never made it to the radio. In the 80's even the famous stars starting to go to discotheques as so many are run by the Mafia.
Channel 80 in Long island was one such place but it had an atmpsophere like no other. ...you could arrive by boat and just have a drink or lunch at the oudoor bar by the marina or have a snack and a drink on the outside dance floor which was very Hot on Sundays and people from Manhattan and long island would flock there because of the Experience. No slops were allowed.
Visage on 56 Street and 10th ave was an extravangaza like no other with mermaids dropping from the over 200 ft ceilings and then diving into the pool. It was 1 whole city block all the way to the westside highway. Another class act were may would go on a friday night after watching Miami Vice on TV.
In long island Fokos was the Premier place to go owned by a Cop and another back up Mafioso place that was the cream of the crop for years.
The one that started it all as far as class acts before the gay clubs in Manhattan was The Monastery, a huge place on Queens Blvd that drew people form Long island and Manhattan.
Two that rented on Tuesday nights again Mafia backed but reall classy..no drugs allowed was
Ripples on the Water and Douglastan Manor were you paid $2.00 at the door but were in Paradise.
Communist Cuomo's sister always trying to get in when she was under age at Elephas on Northern Blvd..
These were the classiest of places
Then when the 90's came along..cocaine became big and the clubs were very trashy as so were the people who frequented such as the limelight, Garage, Chipendales, Cocacabana,
The 70's had some spectacular ones before the drugs like Cheetah,Hollwood,LeJardin were the music was superb.
