COVIDPurpose PANDEMONIC Cultural Analysis

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) has become a go-to reason for world leaders to shut down national economies and to institute de facto martial law. We are told not to panic but are simultaneously given a list of reasons to Panic. We are told to follow orders of the now militarised health authorities without doubt or hesitation: ‘This is for your own safety’. Perhaps it is. We must nonetheless ask whether coercive suspension of basic freedoms is a constructive response to any crisis. Would we know we are in the midst of an extraordinarily lethal pandemic if this virus were not given a name, if we were not bombarded with daily updates of infection and fatality statistics, or if the celebrities did not insist on advertising their (alleged) infection status?
