The most prominent argument I spoke of prior to the Scottish independence referendum was what they hate the most and that being Thatcherism. Although not everyone did, most people grossly misunderstood Margaret Thatcher and a lot of those in the Yes Campaign Scotland despised Margaret Thatcher with an absolute passion. They believe that Thatcherism was the cause of their ills today and that she was to blame for the high unemployment in the early 1980s or apparently she carried out a wrath of deregulation that led to the financial crisis of 2008.
It's because of this gross misunderstanding that was arguably the strongest argument for why I voted no to Scotland separating from the United Kingdom, what they hate is the very thought of reducing tax rates, deregulation or privatisation. Mind you, that's not to say all voters in Scotland favouring Scottish independence are like that, but a lot were.
I remember a "former" Thatcherite businessman standing up speaking about Scottish independence and how he 'used to' favour Thatcherism, you can't help but nod your head, the predictable argument about the cause of the banking crisis came up, which is again to insinuate that deregulation caused the banking crisis which is so far off the truth.
No matter where I turned to when listening to the arguments for Scottish Independence, Margaret Thatcher and Thatcherism was brought up persistently as if to claim that the period of the 1980s was some sort of example of free market capitalism when it clearly wasn't.
I could of course go into more detail on the arguments about Thatcher, if you would like to see my Margaret Thatcher Unemployment argument, you can watch that video here:

There were countless things she was blamed for, none more so than the closure of the pits. People fail to realise that all Thatcher did was open up the industry to free trade, the industries collapsed on their own because they couldn't compete, you're not s..
