"Diabolique," an Henri Georges Clouzot film from 1950, was a shock hit internationally and created the rage for surprise endings. It starred Simone Signoret, Paul Meurisse, and the director's wife, Vera Clouzot. Based on the novel by Boileau and Narsjac, who also penned the original story that became "Vertigo."
It was remade as a TV movie in 1974 by a pre-"Saturday Night Fever" John Badam starring Tuesday Weld, Joan Hackett and Sam Waterston.
The story also served as an inspiration for Robert Aldrich's quintessential "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte," one of the best of the "grande damn guignols" featuring a robust Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Agnes Morehead and Mary Astor.
